RE-USE, REDUCE, RECYCLE

Environmental wellness inspires us to live a lifestyle that is respectful of our surroundings and being in this space encourages us to live in harmony with the Earth by taking action to protect it.

Swim For Change recognizes that our environment impacts on mental health and we want to help create a better environment by doing what we can to re-use, reduce and recycle.

Our SPILL AND SPELL Literacy Kits help build the early literacy skills of young children and help them get ready to read.

The kit includes storybooks to create awareness of the unstable state of our Earth and the effects of our daily habits on the physical environment and how to live more sustainably.

The kits also include storybooks that cover various concepts about mental wellbeing, so that young children not only have fun learning to spell but also become familiar with words associated with mental health to improve their awareness around the topic at a young age. The alphabet tops can also be used in games such as scrabble, word search, bingo, crossword puzzles and word search.

We make the SPILL AND SPELL Literacy Kits from used plastic containers and plastic bottle tops.

The plastic bottle tops each display a different letter of the alphabet and the alphabet tops are used to build words to develop reading skills, which will have a positive impact on education and early childhood development.

The plastic containers are mostly those used for sports nutrition – a multi-billion-rand industry in South Africa.  The containers are large and are a very suitable container for the alphabet blocks.

While the SPILL AND SPELL Literacy Kits help to reduce the amount of plastic polluting the environment and encourage communities to contribute towards a more sustainable future, they’re also supporting literacy development in South Africa.

Lack of resources is one of the main reasons that 8 out of every 10 nine-year-olds in South Africa are currently functionally illiterate.

Many of South Africa’s children are already at a disadvantage before they even begin school. This is because children from low-income families hear on average 30 million fewer words than their affluent peers by the age of three. This alone has a significant impact on their ability to hone basic literacy skills and achieve in school.

Swim For Change distributes the SPILL AND SPELL literacy kits to under-resourced Primary Schools and Early Childhood Development Centers in disadvantaged areas.

Swim For Change is a youth-led organisation and therefore encourages young people, especially teenagers, to give back to underprivileged communities and by doing so, also provide functional learning equipment.

We want children to fall in love with books and stories And we want children to have the opportunity of experiencing a far better world than we currently have.

We want every child to be able to read because this is where a sustainable future begins.

Please donate your empty protein powder containers and plastic bottle tops to help with the imperative quest to get every child reading.  Contact us to enquire about a donation center in your area.
